Remembering Ray Manzarek, Founding Member of the Doors, 2012 SSMF Honoree
I met Ray Manzarek during Motley Crue’s Tribute in 2011, the night he shocked everyone by going to the keyboard and performing a couple of songs instead of to the microphone to say a few words about the honorees. He thought SSMF co-producer Nic Adler was his water boy and asked him to service him with water at the keyboard. As I looked around, I knew that was going to be a historical night.
Attendees were all talking about what a magical moment they had just experienced. To hear Ray Manzarek (who appeared more like a college professor than a rock star) play was mind boggling.
In 2012, the Sunset Strip Music Festival committee decided to honor the most legendary band to emerge from the Sunset Strip — the remaining members of The Doors. That was by far one of the best decisions we could’ve ever made. We now have photos, live footage and interviews with Ray Manzarek that we will forever treasure. May he rest in peace in rock n’ roll heaven.
